In the 1990s, the concept of the platform economy started gaining traction. A research paper titled ‘Platform Competition in Two-Sided Markets’ by Jean-Charles Rochet and Jean Tirole published in the ‘Journal of the European Economic Association’ in 2003 gave this term the required fillip. In a platform economy, businesses moved toward digital platforms. Digital platforms were underlying computer systems that helped different stakeholders, viz. sellers and buyers, interact on a common platform. Companies operating in the platform economy did not control resources. These companies managed resources as per the demand and supply.
